
The Performing Arts Academy of John Marshall High School will present a display of youthful exuberance with Bach, Rock & Shakespeare at THE GREEK THEATRE for the sixth year running. The show is truly a Los Feliz/Silverlake/Atwater community event. The evening will feature orchestral music, both classic and modern, two short plays and Marshall’s own Battle of the Garage Bands final.
The annual showcase will begin with the orchestras of Marshall, King and Irving Middle Schools, and Ivanhoe, Mayberry and Micheltorena Elementary Schools. The PAA Orchestra, under the baton of Dee Dee Paakkari, will perform the music of JS Bach and Hoffmeister as well as fully orchestrated and electrified songs of Santana, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. Orchestra students from surrounding elementary and middle schools will join the Marshall orchestra on stage to form a 125 piece orchestra for “Let It Be”. New this year to the festival, the Marshall drama department will present a musical theatre tribute to Shakespeare “What’s Shakein’” written and directed by Kevin Moran. This will be followed by “The Pied Piper of Hamlin” directed by Jack Fris, featuring actors from the Performing Arts Academy and King Middle School. Also new this year, the Artistic Visions Academy will screen excerpts from their annual Film Festival of student work, produced by Brandon Wilson The evening will conclude with the final round of the once-a-month lunchtime Battle of the Garage Bands. Finalists will perform two songs: one cover and one self-penned, under the direction of the PAA music faculty, Michael Finn and Dee Dee Paakkari. The battle will be judged by a panel of music industry professionals and celebrity judges. Scheduled judges at press time include Rami Jaffee of the Foo Fighters, Samantha Maloney of Chelsea Girls (formerly of Motley Crue and Hole), Corey Parks of Chelsea Girls (formerly of Nashville Pussy), Allison Robertson of Chelsea Girls and The Donnas, and Pierre de Reeder of Rilo Kiley. |
