THE HOLLYWOOD ARTS COUNCIL HONORS THE GREEK THEATRE FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HOLLYWOOD’S ARTS AND CULTURE
LOS ANGELES, CA (February 1, 2005) – The Hollywood Arts Council honored the legendary Greek Theatre with the Theatre Arts Award
on Friday, January 28th at their 19th annual Awards Luncheon known as “The Charlie’s.”
“The Charlie’s” honors individuals, businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to Hollywood’s arts and culture.
In 2004 The Greek Theatre hosted a variety of cultural events including John Marshall High School’s Rock, Bach and Shakespeare event, which featured a one-hour version of the classic production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream followed by a battle of the bands performed by students from local “garage” bands. The Greek Theatre also brought back the ever popular “A Prairie Home Companion” with host Garrison Keillor from KPCC’s 89.3 FM for the third consecutive year as well as several top named artists.
In addition, to a stellar line up of music acts, The Greek Theatre celebrated its 75th Anniversary season with the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation. The theatre entertained thousands of fans with acts such as jazz virtuoso Diana Krall, music sensation Josh Groban the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, guitar legend Carlos Santana and many more. The Greek Theatre will open its 2005 season April 23rd with Sarah McLachlan.
The Greek Theater is owned by the City of Los Angeles, and is managed, operated and promoted by Nederlander-Greek Inc. During Nederlander’s 30 years at The Greek Theatre, it has become a world-renowned, award-winning amphitheatre hosting thousands of events ranging from pop to classical music and reggae to rock making it one of the cultural icons of the city.
